I had a rough wake-up. I thought that I wanted to contact Europcar and confirm when they should pick me up. But they were already there to collect me. Iceland is far away from Europe and not connected to the central computer system of Europcar. So I had no use of my frequent driver status. They wanted to sell me a sand- and volcano ash insurance. When I told that I only drive between Reykjavik and Keflavik, they agree that it would not make too much sense to buy it.

Our Volkswagen Golf. But not Golf 7 yet.

Unser Golf. Noch kein Golf 7.

Zurück zum Hotel und zunächst zum Frühstück. Alles was man zum Überleben braucht...

Back to the hotel and let's have breakfast first. All you need to survive...

We asked the reception desk what you could do. They recommended us a walk in their main shopping street. But honestly: next block there was the park for graffiti artists and 2-3 blocks away from a kind of red-light-district light... We had the plans may be to see the whales in the afternoon. We could walk then around... First we went to Hallgrims Church.

Just in front of the church you had a statue of the No. 1 Viking: Leif Ericsson.

Wow... we did not understand any Icelandic language... but what was the semi-naked man doing in the church... Maybe we should join this church...

For really little money you can get on the tower...

From here you had a great view over Reykjavik.

Bereits vom Turm entdeckt: Die Perle.

Already discovered from the tower: The Pearl. Small problem: when we searched for attractions in our surrounding... It could not be so difficult to find - we thought... The area maps which we could find around were outdated. So we use the domestic airport as orientation. But the access to the hill just opposite was quite difficult to find. Only the last mile was signposted...

Hmm... what did the hotel recommend to us?

Let's start with some culture... the Saga-Museum in the Pearl.

In the price, an audio-guide was included. But I do not like them. But we were told that it would take max. 30 minutes only.

30 Minuten dauert...

War ganz nett gemacht...

Now we understood some of the things we saw yesterday.

Here I was looking for dead bodies visitors who felt into death after this view...

Ein Geysir... mitten im Gebäude...

A Geysir... in the center of the building...

Wir fahren hoch zum SB-Restaurant und Terrassenebene.

We went up to the self-service-restaurant and the terrace level.

Wir essen mal wieder etwas...

And again we ate a little...

The world was beautiful as long as Bruno had his cappuccino... even the service was not the best... But you had the only service in the evening... one floor higher in the revolving restaurant which turns once around its own axle in 60 minutes.

But you can see the same from the terrace what you could see from the revolving restaurant... only during daytime and if you walk around yourself.

As it was too cold and too windy everyone returned quickly.

And now I understood... no Geysir... a bidet for this animal...

We called the whale watching tours: on both tours they saw only dolphins in the morning. They offered us to come back within two years and do another tour again for the worst case we do not see any whales. As we had in the morning an extended chance to make the acquaintance with the domestic airport, we knew where to find the offices of the flight tour companies. The company which offered tours by plane was somehow unfriendly and short when I contacted them by mail, but in nature, they were not better either. First internal discussions and then guests... Same day? Impossible! So we went over to Nordurflug.

First I thought it would go the same way like before, but no: somebody came immediately and asked for our wishes... My wish to see a glacier could not be fulfilled due to budget reason (time and money). But then they explained that you could experience a lot if you book the short tour to the geothermal power stations: 40 minutes for roughly about 320.00 USD per person. It sounded very much. But later we learned how much we got for this money, and it was worth every single Cent! We had no tour in Bergen. Aalesund we spent on Hurtigruten. Lerwick was cheap. Torshavn was cheap. And yesterday the Golden Circle was cheap too. We spent so much money to stay longer in Iceland and to stay overnight in Reykjavik to see more than you should invest to see something - and the weather became better and better. They offered us to have a cup of coffee and see the restrooms. Meanwhile, they would prepare the helicopter. Sounded good.

We watched meanwhile Northern Lights... So nobody could say that we did not say them.

And there was our helicopter.

We had this arrangement: we sat in the front must sit on the return flight in the center of the back side. So we had a kind of interest-balancing.

Our pilot Gudjon! He was genius!!!

Unser Pilot Gudjon.

Carpe Diem! Ergreife den Tag! Mach dein Leben außergewöhnlich!!! - Der Club der toten Dichter.

Eddie was happy: He maybe thought like me: why not using the money himself and to experience something but to leave it for the kids... while I thought that it might be the problem of my bank if I die with some debts... who cares? Carpe Diem! Seize the Day! Make your Life extraordinary!!! - The Dead Poet's Society.

Later Gudjon flew very close to the ground and then you can see how fast you were flying: 75 mi/h. From the top, it looked so very very slow.

  1. It could be that Eddie is smiling because we had to leave you out of our will to pay for this.

In my heart, I was wishing that you would decide to go on the helicopter tour. Gudjon went beyond what was expected of him. It was a wonderful experience.

    Thanks for organizing this.
